Tribe’s Manifesto

Tribe's Manifesto
Tribe's Manifesto

Contemporary history is not made only through major political events, wars or institutional change. It also unfolds through everyday practices, cultural habits, new technologies, changing languages, symbolic objects and apparently marginal phenomena that gradually reshape the ways individuals interpret themselves and the world around them.

The editorial philosophy of TrIBES starts precisely from this observation. The blog is interested in identifying historical trends while they are still unfolding, paying particular attention to those social and cultural transformations that often remain outside mainstream historical narratives. Nostalgia, hobbies, artificial intelligence, digital communities, television, memes, political concepts, language, work, popular culture or consumption are not treated as curiosities. They are understood as privileged observatories through which wider historical transformations become visible.

For this reason, every contribution should move beyond the description of events. The central question is never simply What happened? but rather Why is this phenomenon historically significant? Each article should explain why the chosen topic deserves historical attention and what broader process it helps to illuminate.

This also implies a particular understanding of historical research. TrIBES approaches concepts, practices and identities as historical actors rather than passive objects of observation. Political languages, semantic shifts, cultural practices and collective imaginaries do not merely reflect historical change: they actively contribute to producing it. Historical interpretation therefore requires attention not only to institutions and events, but also to the symbolic dimensions through which societies construct meaning.

Every contribution should consequently be conceived as a historical interpretation rather than as a journalistic report, an opinion piece or a literature review. Books, interviews, political debates, films, exhibitions, digital platforms or public controversies are valuable insofar as they function as historical laboratories through which larger processes become observable. The individual case is never the destination of the analysis, but its point of departure.

The Historical Laboratory

One of the defining characteristics of TrIBES is the notion of the historical laboratory. Every article should identify the broader historical questions made visible by a specific empirical case. A recently published book, a television series, a political event, an online community, a technological innovation or a cultural trend should not become the object of a simple review or summary. Instead, it should be treated as a privileged observatory from which wider historical dynamics may be interpreted.

The movement of the argument should therefore proceed from the particular to the general, from the empirical observation to the historical process, from the concrete example to the conceptual problem. Readers should leave the article not merely knowing more about the selected case, but understanding why it matters for interpreting contemporary society.

Historical and Analytical Perspectives

TrIBES welcomes contributions in English, German and Italian adopting different methodological approaches, provided that they privilege historical interpretation over description. Particularly suitable perspectives include Historical Trend Research, Historical Semantics, Conceptual History, Cultural History, History of Ideas, Historical Sociology, Media History, Political Communication, Memory Studies and phenomenological approaches to social practices. Interdisciplinary contributions are particularly appreciated whenever they help illuminate historical change.

Special attention is devoted to concepts, identities, communities and practices. Authors are encouraged to investigate how collective identities emerge, how informal communities are formed, how political languages evolve, how meanings shift over time and how new forms of social experience become historically relevant.

Prospettive storiche e analitiche

Particolare attenzione è rivolta a concetti, identità, comunità e pratiche sociali.
