Why TrIBES?
TrIBES is an acronym for Trends, Identities and new BElongingS.
It reflects the three interconnected dimensions that guide the project. We investigate how cultural trends emerge and circulate, how collective identities are constructed and transformed, and how new forms of belonging develop within contemporary societies. The acronym also deliberately evokes the word “tribes”, emphasizing the importance of communities, symbolic affiliations and shared cultural practices as key objects of Historical Trend Research.
TrIBES – Historical Trend Research is an international DOI-indexed editorial platform dedicated to the historical interpretation of contemporary society. Rather than documenting current events, the project seeks to understand the historical significance of emerging social, political and cultural phenomena. The underlying assumption is that the present is never self-explanatory: it becomes intelligible only when situated within broader historical processes, conceptual transformations and changing forms of collective experience.
TrIBES therefore occupies an intermediate position between academic research and public humanities. Its ambition is to combine the analytical rigor of historical scholarship with the accessibility of cultural journalism, producing texts that are both intellectually demanding and readable for a wider audience.
Theoretical Framework: Historical Trend Research
The intellectual framework of TrIBES is provided by Historical Trend Research (Historische Trendforschung, HTF).
HTF is a hermeneutic and critical approach that understands trends not as instruments for predicting the future, but as analytical tools for interpreting historical change. Its central assumption is that cultural and social trends become historically significant precisely when they move from peripheral environments into the societal mainstream. At that moment they cease to be isolated phenomena and become indicators of deeper transformations affecting late modern societies.
From this perspective, the focus is less on spectacular events than on apparently minor practices, concepts, cultural artefacts or everyday behaviours that reveal changing values, social relations, political cultures and forms of collective identity. Trends are therefore not linear developments or forecasts. They are historical indicators that make broader processes of transformation visible and interpretable.
Methodologically, Historical Trend Research combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, including historical semantics, discourse analysis, visual ethnography and, increasingly, digital methods and AI-assisted analytical tools. Epistemologically, research follows a three-stage process consisting of knowledge generation, historical contextualisation and validation. The objective is not simply to describe individual phenomena, but to situate them within wider historical developments.
Authors are not expected to discuss Historical Trend Research explicitly or adopt its terminology. Nevertheless, contributions should demonstrate an awareness that the phenomenon under discussion is part of broader historical transformations extending beyond the individual case.
Warum TrIBES?
TrIBES è l’acronimo per Trends, Identities and new BElongingS.
